Summer Sun Award!

I’d like to thank the lovely and EXTREMELY talented Rhiann Wynn-Nolet for this little slice of sunshine:

summer-sun-award

The intent of this award is to present it to someone who brightens your day either in blog format or in general and to have a little fun with giving up some summer secrets.

1. Favorite song with summer in the title or the lyrics (give the line):

This is a little embarrassing, because I’m not really all that gaga for Gaga, but I can’t help loving the song Summerboy. Maybe it’s the jaunty beat, or the instant image of a shirtless Ryan Gosling it invokes. Maybe both. Either way, can you really blame me?

2A. Favorite book about summer:

Are you ready to get obscure? My favorite book about summer is A Taste of Smoke, a YA supernatural love story I read when I was about ten years old. Most girls that age probably would’ve been too creeped out by the premise to consider it a love story, but not me. (As my CPs are well-aware, I’ve always been a little on the dark and twisty side.) To this day, it’s still my favorite example of what would/should happen when a girl falls in love with a supernatural being. (Hint: nothing good. Eat your heart out, Bella Swan.) If you’re dark and twisty like me, and love a good forbidden romance, definitely treat yourself to a little end of summer creepiness.

51SXK7MWVCL__SY346_2B. Favorite “hot” summer film:

Don’t laugh. My all-time favorite summer film is Gidget (1959). (Whether it’s considered hot is debatable, unless we’re talking literally, but whatever.) One summer, I got in a really bad car accident and had to spend a month in bed. I watched the VHS of this movie six times in one day, because my VCR had a remote, and I didn’t feel like getting up to change the tape. And I LOVED it.

Why, you ask? Because this film defines my entire adolescence. Basically, I was a Sandra Dee without a Moon Doggie. (I grew up with all brothers and wanted nothing more than to fit in with the boys, had fake dyed blonde hair, and dreamed of growing boobs as desperately as Harry Potter dreamed of escaping the closet under the stairs.) I also watched a CRAPload of what most kids my age would’ve considered to be “old people” movies.

Gidget

By the time I hit middle school, I’d seen more Elizabeth Taylor and Doris Day movies than Geico has ad campaigns. My celebrity crush vacillated constantly between James Dean and Rock Hudson. (Though, when I was about thirteen, my mom finally broke the news that Rock was into dudes, and both of them had died before I was born.) So there you have it. Apparently my obsession with fictional, unobtainable men is congenital.

3. Favorite summer memory:

THIS ONE. (Ok, so I don’t really remember the specifics, but summers in Montana at my grandparents’ cabin were pretty epic.)

4. Favorite summer holiday destination:

Yeah, I’m gonna go with Colorado. I know what most of you are probably thinking. “You spoiled, ungrateful girl. You live in the CARIBBEAN. How DARE you idealize a landlocked part of America over TROPICAL PARADISE?” (And dang, some of you are really taking this hard. Geez.) Well, I hate to break it to you but the Caribbean sucks gigantic balls of sweat in the summer. Sorry.

5. What books will be in your suitcase this summer?

I’m going to pretend like I’m actually going somewhere instead of living in a tourist trap. Here’s what I would pile into my kindle:

a. The complete anthology of Suzanne Brockmann’s Troubleshooters Series.

b. The books I’m supposed to be reading for my real housewives of SGU book club, which I haven’t started yet because I’m not allowed to: Gone Girl, Bitter is the New Black etc., and Divergent.

c. The Belgariad, which I’ve been DYING to re-read for years now. Also Garth Nix’s Abhorsen trilogy. (And seriously, for the love of GOD, why have neither of these series been turned into film franchises yet? Kickstarter, I summon thee.)

6. What’s your likely destination this summer?

At the rate I’m going? Hell.

7. What hottie would you most like to be sharing the hot days and long nights with this summer?

I just discovered that I can access both Netflix AND Hulu down here, so I have ALREADY been spending this summer with the following hotties:

Oh, and also my husband.

Here are the rules:

1.     Display the Summer Sun Award logo and link back to the blog of the person who nominated you.

2.     Answer the questions listed above.

3.     Nominate a further eight lucky recipients (one for each sun-ray).

I nominate the following people:

1. Chynna-Blue (Ink) – Two words: ZOMBIE. PROJECT.

2. Louise D. Gornall – Her hair is awesome. Her writing is equally awesome.

3. Lela Gwenn – Agency “sister” and all around badass. I kind of think she’s amazing. Also, I might have a hetero girl crush. (Might = definitely.)

4. Rhonda Helms – Fellow mayor of Cheesetown, USA. (Working title of my upcoming, completely fictional cheese lover organization.) Editor/author extraordinaire. (aka @OliviaMayfield)

5. Mark Carson – Aspiring author and seriously chill dude. Dude.

6. Emmie Mears – If waitressing as a day job can be compared to military service, she’s a fellow veteran who carries many scars. Her twitter feed brings me joy.

7. Ashley Bacon – First of all, there’s the word “bacon” in her name. Secondly, I had the pleasure of judging her entry for #LV13 and let’s just say this kid is going places.

8. Mina Vaughn – She’s probably WAY too famous by now to even remember me, but we met at NECRWA this year in Boston and I literally fell in love with her alter ego’s personal style and her actual ego’s (?) personality. Also, the SHOES. Her first book just came out and I am currently reading it. It’s steamy and fabulous.

Disclaimer: if those nominated don’t want to blog this award, that’s cool. No pressure. I just wanted to let you all know that I think you’re pretty fricking awesome. That is all.
